    The Metrical Dindshenchasor Lore of Places, is probably the major surviving monument of Irish bardic verse. Cardinal, London, pp. With the release in of two governmental inquires, commonly referred to as the Ryan and Murphy reports after the justices who presided over them, two decades of shameful revelations about sexual and physical abuse perpetrated by Catholic priests, brothers, and nuns have reached a horrifying culmination. In them has the Word been made flesh. From this environment emerged poets who rebelled against the example of Yeats, but who were not Modernist by inclination. One of the most significant of these was Douglas Hyde —later the first President of Irelandwhose Love Songs of Connacht was widely admired.

    All of them came of age during the period when Catholicism penetrated most deeply and pervasively into Irish life. Verse tales of Fionn and the Fianna, sometimes known as Ossianic poetry, were extremely common in Ireland and Scotland throughout this period. Macpherson's treatment of them was said to have ushured in the Romance tradition as opposed to the epic nature of the sagas. Some of them continued to find patronage among the Gaelic Irish and Old English aristocracy. In the 18th century and 19th century Irish nationalist poets began writing in English but preserving the metre and stylisms of Gaelic Irish poetry.

    The poem begins by using the conventions of the Aislingor vision poem, in which the poet is out walking when he has a vision of a woman from the other world.
